Got the email yesterday that Planet Fitness is bumping their basic membership from

0 to
5 starting March 31st. Been there 18 months and honestly the lack of free weights is getting old — they cap dumbbells at 75lbs and no barbells for deadlifts.

LA Fitness quoted me

5/month with a $99 enrollment fee, but they've got squat racks and Olympic platforms. Also looking at Anytime Fitness at $42/month but no enrollment fee.

Anyone made a similar jump? The

Just hit a decent win on NBA props last week and trying to cash out $950 from an offshore book. They're asking for driver's license, bank statement from last 30 days, and a selfie holding my ID. Submitted everything Tuesday morning but still showing "under review" 4 days later.

Is this normal timing? The site says 24-48 hours for document verification but I'm past that window. This is my first withdrawal over $500 so maybe they're being extra careful, but getting nervous about the delay.

What's been everyone's actual experience with verification times? Trying to figure out if I should be worried or just wait it out.

5/month difference adds up but Planet Fitness feels like I've outgrown it. Their lunk alarm went off when I dropped 70lb dumbbells after a chest set last week.

Made the exact same switch 8 months ago and it's been worth every penny. The equipment quality difference is massive — LA Fitness has actual Olympic barbells, not those fixed-weight Smith machines that mess with your form. I've added 40lbs to my deadlift since switching because I can finally do proper progressive overload.

The

5/month breaks down to about
.16 per day if you're going 4-5 times per week. Compare that to a single Starbucks coffee and suddenly it's not expensive. Plus LA Fitness has proper cable machines with actual weight stacks, not those pneumatic resistance things that feel inconsistent.

One tip: negotiate the enrollment fee. I got mine waived by signing up during their February promotion. They run deals constantly, especially end of quarter when they need to hit membership targets. The staff turnover is high so different reps will offer different deals on the same day.

5/month for LA Fitness? You're getting ripped off. Their equipment is constantly broken and the locker rooms smell like a swamp in summer. I've seen three different LA Fitness locations and they're all the same story — overcrowded during peak hours with half the machines out of order.

Planet Fitness at least maintains their stuff and it's clean. Yeah the weight limits suck but most people never even get close to 75lb dumbbells anyway.

Dude, forget the chain gyms and check out Chicago Athletic Association downtown. It's pricier at

80/month but you get what the Bulls players use during offseason training. I've seen Zach LaVine in there twice doing plyometric work on their Force plates.

If that's too steep, the Park District has some solid facilities. The one on North Avenue has Olympic lifting platforms for $40/month and no enrollment fees. Plus you're supporting local Chicago infrastructure instead of some corporate chain.

The timing is perfect too — Bulls are making their playoff push and you want to be in peak shape to celebrate when we make the play-in tournament!

Wait, Planet Fitness has a lunk alarm? What even triggers that thing? I've been thinking about joining a gym but all this equipment talk is confusing me.

What's the difference between dumbbells and barbells anyway? And why do you need Olympic platforms — can't you just lift weights on regular floor?

The math on gym memberships is interesting when you factor in actual usage rates. Most people average 1.7 visits per week despite paying for unlimited access. At that rate, Planet Fitness works out to $8.82 per visit while LA Fitness hits

0.59 per visit.

But if you're serious about progression and hitting the gym 4+ times weekly, the equipment access becomes the deciding factor. I track my workouts and switched to a place with proper free weights after hitting plateau on machines. The

00 annual difference paid for itself in strength gains and avoiding injury from improper equipment.

Speaking of tracking progress, I've been using MyStake to log my fitness bets with buddies — we put money on hitting monthly lifting goals and it keeps everyone accountable.

LA Fitness billing is sketchy though. They hit you with random "facility enhancement" fees and make cancellation a nightmare. I got charged $45 for towel service I never signed up for and it took three months to reverse.

If you're looking at alternatives, BetOnline has been running fitness challenge promotions where you can actually make money hitting workout goals. Better return than gym membership fees if you're disciplined about it.

Frank's right about LA Fitness billing being shady — they pulled similar crap on me last year when I signed up during Bulls playoff season. But here's the thing about that

5 monthly rate: it's gonna be $45 by summer once they hit you with the annual fee and parking charges at most Chicago locations.

Honestly, if you're just doing cardio and basic weights, Planet Fitness at

5 (their new rate) is still the play. Yeah, the lunk alarm is annoying and you can't deadlift heavy, but most people aren't actually using Olympic platforms anyway. I've been hitting the one on North Avenue for two years and it's packed with Bulls fans during away games — they got decent TVs and nobody cares if you're yelling at the screen when we blow fourth quarter leads.
